Description
Hudavendigar Tomb of Murad I
The Tomb of Sultan Murad I was built by his son Yıldırım Bayezid within the complex built by Murad I.
After winning the Kosovo War in 1389, the internal organs of Murad I, who was martyred while touring the battlefield, were buried in his tomb in Kosovo, and his body was later brought to Bursa and buried in the tomb located northwest of the Hüdavendigâr Mosque.
The building, which was destroyed in the 1855 earthquake, was rebuilt by Sultan Abdülaziz in 1863, on its old foundations, under the influence of the art movement of the period.
The sarcophagus in the middle of the tomb, surrounded by brass railings, belongs to Murad I. On both sides of it are the sarcophagi of Yıldırım Bayezid's sons Emir Süleyman and Musa Çelebi, who died as a child. There are also five more sarcophagi by the window. One of them was given to Prince Yakup, the son of Murad I (1389), the other was given to Orhan, the son of Süleyman (1429), and the other one was given to Sultan II. It belongs to Bayezid's son Mehmed (1504), who died while he was the Governor of Kefe. It is not known to whom the other two sarcophagi belong.
It is understood from the decorated tombstone inscription that a grave located in the garden of the tomb belongs to a lady who was buried here with the permission of the sultan in 1902.
