    Description

    Green (Mehmed I) Social Complex
The complex, built by Sultan Mehmed I (Çelebi) in 1419, symbolizes the rebirth of Ottoman rule after the defeat against Timur in the Battle of Ankara (July 28, 1402). Complex; It consists of a mosque, madrasah, inn, tomb, bath and soup kitchen. Inside the tomb are the sarcophagi of Çelebi Sultan Mehmed, his sons and daughters, and his nanny.

In his Travelogue, Evliya Çelebi says about the Green Mosque: "This mosque is such a mosque in terms of elegance and beauty that there is no building like it on earth." The mihrab and mahfili of the mosque are covered with Iznik tiles of the period and have an extraordinary decoration. The tiles contain 80% quartz, in other words semi-precious mineral stones. The structures of the complex were created with the extraordinary efforts of artists such as its architect Hacı İvaz Pasha, Nakkaş Ali İbn İlyas Ali from Bursa, tile master Mecnun Mehmed, wood carver Hacı Ali from Tabriz and tile maker Pir Mehmed Çelebi. The inclusion of artist signatures on the decorative elements of the building also shows the value that the Sultan, the founder of the building, gave to art and artists.
The structures and decorations within the social complex have attracted the attention of researchers and artists throughout history, and their awareness has increased the recognition of Bursa. French architect Leon Parvillé, who was invited to Bursa by Bursa Governor Ahmet Vefik Pasha between 1864-67, drew the facade, interior, stonework and tile decorations of the Green Mosque in detail and left important documents introducing the structure to the present day.
Osman Hamdi Bey (1842-1910), a museum curator and painter who is considered the first Turkish archaeologist, is also known as the first painter to use figured composition in Turkish painting. The figure in the painting "Turtle Trainer" (1906), one of the most well-known works of Osman Hamdi Bey, who is also the founder of Sanayi-i Nefise Mekteb-i Alisi (Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University) and Istanbul Archeology Museum, is shown as the location in the room on the upper floor of Bursa Yeşil Mosque. The tiles in his paintings Two Musician Girls (1880) and Prayer at the Green Tomb (1882) also attract attention with their realistic appearance. The Green Mosque and Tomb tiles, which are the subject of the painter's paintings, continue to have the same effects today.

Diagonally opposite the bath, which was built in a single bath typology by Türbedar Köse Ali Pasha (Sofu Bedreddin) in 1480 during the reign of Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror, and whose inscription on its door says that denergec water was used, Yeşil Madrasa, one of the most respected madrasahs of the time, with the name of Sultaniye Madrasa, operates as the Museum of Turkish Islamic Works. The almshouse maintains the same function.

It is located within the area declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014.
