    Description

Khans Area (surroundings of Orhan Social Complex)
Bursa, the first Ottoman capital, is also one of the important trade centers in the history of the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Türkiye.

This important commercial role of Bursa and being the capital of the Ottoman Empire was reflected in the Khans Region as large inns, covered bazaars and bazaars. This area has been the center of economic activity in the city since its founding in the 14th century. The area has preserved its aesthetic and social value and is fully pedestrianized, making it an attractive public space for both tourists and residents. Inns and bazaars continue to operate uninterruptedly since their establishment 700 years ago.

Emir Han, which is part of the Orhan Gazi Social Complex in the region, was the first to be built. Kapan Han was built in the southwest of Emir Han during the reign of Murad I, and the Bedesten surrounding the Khans Region from the north was also built during the Yıldırım period. İpek Han, built during the reign of Mehmed I and II. Kütahya Han, built during the reign of Murad; It forms the East-West axis of the Khans Region. Bazaars developed around the inns. A long and narrow street network with shops forms the bazaar itself.

Social complexes consist of buildings with different functions such as mosques, madrasahs, soup kitchens, baths, and sometimes even hospitals or income-generating bazaars and inns. Social complexes were built in order to form the center of the settlements to be built around them in the future and to trigger the development of the city in a certain direction. While the sultans had these social complexes built in different centers of the city, they also contributed to the construction of other public buildings in the Khans Region (trade center).

After the Orhan Gazi Social Complex was built in the northeast of the Byzantine settlement located on a hill between two rivers in the second quarter of the 14th century, construction works continued in the new settlement area in order to reinforce the decision to choose this region as the city center.

Orhan Gazi Social Complex consists of a mosque, a bath, a soup kitchen and an inn (Emir Han).

Orhan Mosque is the first building built within the social complex. It is the first mosque in which the "⊥" plan (with zawiya and tabhane) is seen, which is one of the most important designs of the Early Period Ottoman architecture. The need for units that would meet the physical, cultural and social needs of the state in the establishment phase was effective in the creation of this more complicated plan type. The mosque consists of the main place of worship called Harim, an iwan on each side of this place of worship, and two tabhane spaces placed on the north and south of the iwans.

It is located within the area declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014.
