Description
Hüdavendigar (Murad I) Social Complex
The complex, built by Sultan Murad I in 1363/66, enabled the city to expand towards the west. It contains a mosque, a madrasah, a soup kitchen, a bath and a tomb. The most important feature of the Hüdâvendigâr Mosque is the madrasah located on the second floor of the mosque as part of the same building. This building is a single and unique example of an Ottoman Mosque with two porticoes.
There are 8 sarcophagi in the tomb structure, including one of Sultan Murad Hüdâvendigâr (Murad I). The soup kitchen, which was repaired by Sultan Abdulhamid in 1906 after being damaged in the earthquake in 1855, is used as a sociocultural center today.
The fact that the Gir-Çık bath in the east of the mosque was built smaller than the other complex baths explains that the necessary functional units were included in the complex, but the nearby Old Thermal Spring was also benefited from.
The social complex gave its name to a neighborhood in the region where it is located. In addition, the area where the Social Complex is located is a spa area with healing waters, and this area is still important for the city today.
It is located within the area declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014.
