Description
Obelisk (Obelisk/ Fivestone)
This monument, also known as Beştaş, Dikilitaş or Nişantaşı, is located approximately 5.5 km northwest of Iznik. The tomb monument, which rises today in wooded agricultural areas, is located on the road from Nikaia (Iznik) to Nicomedia (Izmit) during the Roman Empire, in line with scientific studies.
Obelisk, one of the unique erected mausoleum structures in Anatolia, is 12 m high. It has a 2 m wide and 3 m high pedestal on a 3-step podium. On the pedestal, there is a cornice block with 46 cm high palmette decorated acroterias on which triangular pyramidal blocks sit. On the cornice block, there are 5 triangular pyramidal marble blocks, whose surfaces rise upwards, fixed to each other with metal wedges. It is thought that there may be a sixth block or a different material, based on the gaps where the metal wedge will sit on the fifth block at the top.
The inscription on the western façade of the wide first stone of the obelisk reads in Greek capital letters Γ ΚΑΣΣΙΟΣ ΦΙΛΙΣΚΟΣ Γ ΚAΣΣΙΟΥ ΑΣΚΛΗΠΙΟΔΟΤΟΥ ΥΙΟΣ ΖΗΣΑΣ ΕΤH ΠΓ (= Γ. Κάσσιος Φιλίσκος, Γ. Κασσίου Ἀσκληπιοδότου υἱός, ζήσας ἔτη πγʹ) is written. The Turkish translation of the Greek inscription on this tomb monument is as follows: Gaius Cassius Philis, son of Gaius Cassius Akslepiodotos, who lived for 83 years (lies here). Inscription; It provides information about the relationship between father, son and death. The Cassius family is an important family in the city of Nikaia. It is known from many different inscriptions found in the city that this family supported the construction of some of the city walls and city gates of Nikaia.
