Description
Geyikli Baba Tomb
It is in Babasultan Village of Kestel district of Bursa. Babasultan Village, which was referred to as "Geyikli Baba village" in the title deed books of the period, is 40 km from Bursa. It is located in a genteel environment, covered with groves, shaded by large plane trees, and attracting attention with the beauty of its air and water, at the foot of Uludağ, south of the Bursa-İnegöl road. Geyikli Baba, who was a member of the Vefâiyye sect, the sect of Tâcülârifîn Seyyid Ebü'l-Vefâ el-Bağdâdî, is one of the leading figures in the epic history of the period reflecting the establishment of the Ottoman Empire and one of the best representatives of the ghazi-dervish type, one of the heroes of this history. According to the rumor, Geyikli Baba was a dervish who came to Anatolia from Hoy (Azerbaijan) during the time of Orhan Bey and settled near İnegöl with his disciples. He participated in the conquest of Bursa with his followers riding deers like himself. (1326) After the conquest, today's Baba Sultan Village was granted by Orhan Gazi to Geyikli Baba and his followers to establish their lodge. It is believed that the grand plane tree in the courtyard of the mosque next to the tomb was planted at the same time as the plane tree rumored to have been planted by Geyikli Baba near the palace in Bursa. The mosque and the tomb, which were repaired by the General Directorate of Foundations in 1958 and by the Bursa Antiquities Lovers Institution in 1963-1964, are in a well-maintained condition today. The mosque continues its original use, and the tomb is open to visitors.
