Description
Open Namazgah
It was built by the son of Kara Timurtaş Bey, the commander from Bursa, Umur Bey, during the reign of Yıldırım Bayezid (1389-1403) in the early 1400s. It is the first and most important of the structures built as an open prayer place in Turkey. At the time it was built, the open prayer place, located outside the city and in a place overlooking the surroundings, was a building where the army performed collective prayers before going on a campaign. He also gave his name to the neighborhood where he is located.
The square-plan prayer place, which is an open-top prayer hall, is surrounded by marble railings. The entire building, including the pointed arched door at the entrance, flooring, side railings, mihrab wall and pulpit, is built of white marble.
Today, it continues its main function by being used to perform tarawih and Eid prayers during Ramadan during the summer months.
