Description
Iznik Tile
Iznik district of Bursa is a city that has been the capital of many civilizations. It is also the capital of China.
This magnificent art came to life in master hands and experienced its golden period in the 14th and 15th centuries. Tile used to decorate many mosques and palaces of the period further increased the magnificence of these structures.
Since it contains 80% quartz, that is, semi-precious stone minerals, it has entered the ceramics literature as "Impossible Ceramic to Produce".
Artists symbolized the social life and beliefs of the period they lived in with motifs and engraved them on the tiles. The main theme in the motifs mixed with Islamic philosophy is reaching God. While grapes symbolize abundance in every period, tulip represents life. Tiles, in which the symbols of peace and love are depicted with colors and motifs, constitute an important part of our historical and cultural heritage that has been transferred to the present day.
"Traditional Tile Craftsmanship" was recorded in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity Representative List on behalf of our country at the 11th Ordinary Meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee on Intangible Cultural Heritage held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia between 28 November and 02 December 2016.
