Description
Demirkapi Church
The church was built in the name of the angels Mikael and Gabriel during the reign of Orhan Gazi (1326-1359). Originally known as "Taxiarhon Church", it is an old Greek Orthodox church. However, the church is known as "Demirkapı Church" because it is located in the Demirkapı district. It is one of the rare surviving churches in Bursa.
The church, which has an east-west orientation and a basilical plan, is covered with a wooden hipped roof and tiles. The church was built by Sultan II. in 1835 with the initiative of Kyranthimos. It was repaired by Mahmud.
In the first years of the Republic, the church lost its community due to population exchange. In 1926, the church came under the ownership of the Yılmazipek family and served as a factory where silk twisting and weaving processes were carried out until 1985.
