    Description

    Bedesten
Bedesten, built by Yıldırım Bayezid (1389-1402) at the end of the 14th century, is the first bedesten of the Ottoman Period. The first trade center built by Orhan Bey is known as Bezzazistan-ı Cedîd (New Bedesten) because it was built after Emir Han. It was planned north of the Ulu Mosque, parallel to the bazaar axis.

The building, which has doors opening in four directions, is the pioneer of the idea of covered bazaar located in the center within the traditional Turkish bazaar system, with the possibility of passage to all sides. With this bedesten, the focal point of the bazaar has become clearer. It also set an example for the Edirne Bedesten built after him.

There are 32 shops inside and 68 shops outside. 12 of the shops located outside were built for the Orhan Gazi Foundation and the others were built to generate income for the Yıldırım Foundation.

In the Grand Bazaar fire in 1958, many inns and bazaars, as well as the bazaar, were damaged. It was restored to its original state in 1960.

This building, which was the core of banking and stock exchange when it was built, was used for centuries as a place where the country's most valuable goods were bought and sold and valuable items were stored. Today, it is used as a building where jewelers are concentrated.
