Description
Bursa Towel
The towel, which is among the values of Bursa, is Bursa's gift to the world with a velvet touch. Bursa is where the towel, an indispensable part of daily life, was born and raised in Anatolia.
Towel making was born as a by-product of velvet weaving. This beautiful enterprise, which started by producing five or ten towels a day on primitive hand looms established at the beginning of the 18th century, has continued to develop for 3 centuries. Today, Havlucular Bazaar, located in the area west of the Ulu Mosque, continues this tradition.
Towels in Bursa, 18th century. It started to be woven on hand looms from the beginning of the century. The weaving methods of Bursa towels were taken from the Bursa velvet fabrics woven in the Ottoman and world palaces in the 15th century. Jacquard, embroidered and tasseled towels woven on traditional looms vary according to their usage areas. There are varieties such as bath towels, hand towels and head towels, as well as embroidered or plain tassels or without tassels, for daily use, special occasions, wedding and bridal baths, and as gifts. In Bursa's Grand Bazaar and Inns region, towel makers' bazaar, where only towels and bath materials are sold, sell towels designed and woven in factories, as well as towels woven with traditional methods. Bursa, where the Towel Cooperative was established in 1941 and modern towel weaving facilities were established, is today in an important place in world towel production.
