Socks, which people have worn throughout history for dressing purposes, protection from the cold, and self-expression, have turned into an economic activity in Bursa, an occupation that has been continued for generations. When knitting socks made of wool, cotton or nylon yarn, five small needles called "spindles" are used. Socks are classified according to their number of stitches; 18 stitches of men's socks, 15 or 16 stitches of women's socks, and 12 stitches of children's or baby socks are knitted. In addition, booties called "çetik", knitted up to the ankle with 15 - 16 stitches, are knitted for young girls' dowry and for daily use. In socks knitted for sale, the zenne pattern is used only on the toe and heel, and motifs called fern, geranium, almond, mushroom, corn, apple blossom, daisy, earring, clover, violet, houndstooth, butterfly and so-called cancer because they are difficult to knit are used. Socks, whose colors and motifs vary depending on whether young or old, child, bride or status, are knitted in many colors and with many patterns for the dowry of young girls. Socks knitted by family elders have sentimental value. Yenikaraağaç village of Bursa's Karacabey District is known as the sock making village because women and men knit socks together.
