Description
Tahtakale (Yoghurt) Inn
It was built by Bayezid Pasha in the first quarter of the 15th century to generate income for the mosque and madrasah he built in his name in Yeşil. Bayezid Pasha is the vizier of Çelebi Sultan Mehmed.
During the Byzantine period before the Ottomans, the area known as "Taht-El Kale" was a place where horses were tied and used as an infirmary for horses. As the city began to move out of the castle during the Ottoman period, a neighborhood and bazaar emerged in this region. The name Tahtakale, transformed from the name "Taht-el-kale", means "Under the Castle". It is known that in the past, places where vegetables and fruits were sold were called Tahtakale. It was also called "Yoghurt Inn" because the villagers brought ayran and yoghurt and sold them here. The inn is also known as "Bayezid Pasha Inn".
It is understood from historical documents that the two-storey inn had 21 rooms on the lower floor and 25 rooms on the upper floor. Today, two floors of the rooms in the east of the inn and only the lower floors of the rooms in the south remain standing.
