Description
Tirilye Fatih Mosque
The building, built in the 8th century under the name Hagios Stephanos or Panagia Evangistra, is one of the earliest examples of the closed Greek cross plan, which was frequently seen in Byzantine church architecture from the middle period onwards. It has a rectangular plan in the east-west direction. It is thought that it was built on the foundations of an old church, using the materials of that church. It was repaired after the earthquakes of 1063 and 1065 and was converted into a mosque in the 16th century and named Fatih Mosque. It was used as a church during the Greek occupation (1920-22), and was converted into a mosque again after the occupation.
