Description
Orhan Mosque
The mosque, which is the central structure of the Orhan Complex, was built by Orhan Bey in 1339. It is the first building built outside the city walls after the conquest of Bursa. The building, which is one of the most important designs of the early Ottoman period architecture, is the first mosque with an inverted "T" plan (with tabhanes and lodges) in Bursa.
High pointed arches made of brick and stone rows, brick sun courses and rosettes on the facades are the remarkable elements of the mosque. There are column capitals from the Byzantine period on the side facades of the narthex of the building. According to a legend, Hacivat and Karagöz, who are also on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List today, are the masters who worked on the construction of Orhan Mosque.
The building is located within the area declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014.
